Description

These simple red velvet cookies with cream cheese frosting are a soft, bakery-style treat with a hint of cocoa and a rich tangy topping. They are perfect for a holiday dessert, easy recipe ideas, Valentine’s Day sweets, party desserts, food ideas, and make-ahead cookie recipes when you want a quick dessert that still feels special.

Ingredients

Scale

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup light brown sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon red food coloring

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

2 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. In a large bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

4. Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until fully combined.

5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix just until a soft dough forms.

6. Scoop the dough into evenly sized portions and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each cookie.

7. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, until the edges are set and the centers are still soft.

8. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

9. To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese until smooth, then mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until creamy.

10. Spread or pipe the frosting over the completely cooled cookies before serving.

Notes

Use room temperature butter and cream cheese for the smoothest dough and frosting.

Do not overbake the cookies, because they will continue to set as they cool.

Always frost the cookies only after they are completely cool so the topping stays thick and pretty.
