Description

Homemade Naan Bread is a soft, chewy flatbread with a golden blistered surface, ideal for pairing with savory curries or enjoyed on its own with a brush of butter. Easy to make and better than store-bought, this naan is made with a yeast-based dough enriched with yogurt and milk, then cooked on a skillet until perfectly puffed and charred.

Ingredients

Scale

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 cup warm water (around 110°F)

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup plain yogurt

2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or olive oil)

1/4 cup warm milk

Melted butter or ghee for brushing

Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds for topping

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk yogurt, oil, and warm milk.
  4. Add the yeast mixture and yogurt mixture to the flour. Stir to form dough.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  6. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
  7. Punch down and divide into 6–8 pieces. Roll each into an oval shape.
  8. Heat a skillet on medium-high. Cook each naan 1–2 minutes per side until golden spots appear.
  9. Brush with butter or ghee and sprinkle with optional toppings.
