Description
Traditional Southern Fried Apples are a comforting dish made with tender apple slices, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon. Perfect as a dessert, breakfast topping, or side dish for savory meals, they deliver old-fashioned Southern flavor in every bite.
Ingredients
5 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/3 cup light brown sugar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Pinch of salt
Instructions
1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into evenly thick wedges.
2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until foamy.
3. Add the sliced apples and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Sprinkle in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to coat the apples.
5. Reduce heat to low and let the apples simmer for 5–8 more minutes.
6. Stir in vanilla extract and lemon juice. Continue cooking until syrup is thick and apples are tender.
7. Serve warm over pancakes, biscuits, or as a standalone treat.
Notes
Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Fuji to avoid mushy texture.
Don’t skip the lemon juice—it brightens the dish and keeps apples from browning.
For extra richness, try adding a splash of heavy cream or bourbon at the end.
