Ingredients

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast

1 cup warm milk

2 tbsp sugar

4 tbsp butter, melted

1 large egg

1 tsp salt

2 medium onions, thinly sliced

1 ½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Gruyère, or mix


Instructions

  1. Warm milk and mix with sugar and yeast; let sit until foamy.
  2. In a bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture, egg, and melted butter. Mix into a dough.
  3. Knead dough on floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
  5. While rising, caramelize onions in butter over medium heat, about 20 minutes. Cool.
  6. Punch down dough, roll out, spread onions and cheese, roll or twist, place in pan.
  7. Let rise 30–40 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Sprinkle extra cheese on top; bake 30–35 minutes until golden.
  9. Cool slightly before slicing; serve warm.
