3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 loaf brioche or challah bread, thickly sliced (about 10 slices)
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup whole milk
5 large eggs
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt

- Arrange thick slices of bread over the caramel layer in a single, slightly overlapping layer.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt.
- Pour the custard evenly over the bread, pressing gently to help it absorb. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- The next morning, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Let the dish sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
- Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until puffed and golden.
