Ingredients
1 cup molasses
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon white vinegar
2 tablespoons water
1 pinch salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
1. Grease a heatproof marble slab or a baking sheet with butter. Prepare buttered scissors and squares of wax paper for wrapping.
2. In a heavy saucepan, combine molasses, sugar, butter, vinegar, water, and salt. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
3. Bring mixture to a boil without stirring. Cook until it reaches 250°F to 255°F (hard ball stage) on a candy thermometer.
4. Pour the hot taffy onto the prepared surface and allow it to cool until safe to touch.
5. Butter your hands and pull the taffy by stretching and folding until light in color and firm (about 10–15 minutes).
6. Shape into a rope and cut into bite-sized pieces using buttered scissors. Wrap each piece in wax paper and twist the ends.
7. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks.
Notes
Use unsulfured molasses for the best flavor—avoid blackstrap for this recipe.
Pulling the taffy is essential to get a chewy, airy texture and shiny finish.
Store wrapped taffy in a cool, dry place—moisture will make it sticky.
