This Irresistible Amish White Bread is soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for everything from toast to sandwiches. Made with basic pantry staples, it’s a beginner-friendly recipe that delivers that comforting, homemade flavor. Ideal for meal prep or cozy weekend baking.
Ingredients
1 cup warm water
⅓ cup granulated sugar
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 ½ teaspoons salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy.
2. Stir in the oil and salt. Add the flour one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
3. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for 6 to 8 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a towel, and let rise in a warm area for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled.
5. Punch down the dough and divide it into two. Shape into loaves and place into greased 9×5-inch pans.
6. Let rise again for 30 to 45 minutes until the dough has crowned above the pan.
7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
8. Remove from pans and let cool on a wire rack. Slice and enjoy or store as needed.
Notes
For a softer crust, brush melted butter over the top right after baking.
Ensure your water is warm, not hot (around 110°F), to activate yeast without killing it.
This dough can also be shaped into rolls or baked free-form if you don’t have loaf pans.
