Description
Flaky, buttery puff pastry envelopes a sweet, gooey cherry pie filling in these easy-to-make Homemade Cherry Puff Turnovers. Finished with a golden egg wash and a dusting of powdered sugar, they’re perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert.
Ingredients
1 package puff pastry sheets (2 sheets, thawed but cold)
1 ½ cups cherry pie filling
1 egg
1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons powdered sugar
½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly flour your surface.
2. Unfold the puff pastry sheets and roll them slightly to smooth the creases. Cut into 4 to 6 even squares per sheet.
3. Spoon 1 to 1½ tablespoons of cherry pie filling onto the center of each square. Add almond extract to filling if desired.
4. Fold each square diagonally into a triangle. Seal edges by pressing with a fork. Chill if pastry becomes too soft.
5. Place turnovers on baking sheet. Mix egg with water to create egg wash and brush over each triangle.
6. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until golden and puffed.
7. Let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
Keep the puff pastry cold while working to ensure a flaky texture.
Don’t overfill each square—too much filling causes leaks.
For best texture, reheat leftovers in the oven to restore crispness.
