Cube Steak Smothered with Onion Gravy is the ultimate Southern-style comfort food. Fork-tender beef steaks simmer in a rich, savory onion gravy that’s perfect over mashed potatoes or rice. It’s simple, hearty, and full of nostalgic flavor.
Ingredients
4 cube steaks
2 large yellow onions, sliced
2 cups beef broth
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black peppe
r 2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons oil
Instructions
- 1. Pat the cube steaks dry with paper towels.
- Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Dredge the steaks lightly in flour, shaking off any excess.
- Heat butter and oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Sear steaks for 3–4 minutes per side until browned.
- Remove and set aside. In the same skillet, add more butter if needed.
- Add sliced onions and sauté for 8–10 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized.
- Sprinkle remaining flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps.
- Add Worcestershire sauce and stir until thickened into a gravy.
- Return steaks to the pan, cover, and simmer on low for 20–25 minutes until fork-tender.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.
Notes
For deeper onion flavor, use sweet Vidalia onions
. If gravy thickens too much during simmering, add a splash of broth to loosen it.
This dish gets even better the next day, making it perfect for meal prep or leftovers.
