Description

Cube Steak Smothered with Onion Gravy is the ultimate Southern-style comfort food. Fork-tender beef steaks simmer in a rich, savory onion gravy that’s perfect over mashed potatoes or rice. It’s simple, hearty, and full of nostalgic flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

4 cube steaks

2 large yellow onions, sliced

2 cups beef broth

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black peppe

r 2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  1. 1. Pat the cube steaks dry with paper towels.
  2. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Dredge the steaks lightly in flour, shaking off any excess.
  4. Heat butter and oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Sear steaks for 3–4 minutes per side until browned.
  6. Remove and set aside. In the same skillet, add more butter if needed.
  7. Add sliced onions and sauté for 8–10 minutes until deeply golden and caramelized.
  8. Sprinkle remaining flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  9. Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps.
  10. Add Worcestershire sauce and stir until thickened into a gravy.
  11. Return steaks to the pan, cover, and simmer on low for 20–25 minutes until fork-tender.
  12. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

For deeper onion flavor, use sweet Vidalia onions

. If gravy thickens too much during simmering, add a splash of broth to loosen it.

This dish gets even better the next day, making it perfect for meal prep or leftovers.
