4 ounces dried beef

4 tablespoons butter

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 ½ cups whole milk

½ teaspoon black pepper

4 slices thick-cut bread (for toasting)

Optional: chopped parsley or paprika for garnish


Instructions

1. Rinse the dried beef under cold water to reduce saltiness. Pat dry and slice into bite-sized strips.

2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour to create a roux. Stir continuously for 1 minute until smooth.

3. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Cook for 3–5 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.

4. Add the chopped beef to the skillet. Simmer on low for 2–3 minutes to blend the flavors. Season with black pepper to taste.

5. While the sauce simmers, toast your bread until golden and crisp.

6. Serve the creamed beef over toast slices. Garnish with parsley or a sprinkle of paprika if desired.


Notes

Rinsing the beef is essential to keep the dish from becoming overly salty.

Whole milk creates the richest flavor and texture, but you can use 2% if preferred.
