Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon cream of tartar
24 maraschino or jarred sour cherries
½ cup sliced almonds Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
Instructions
1. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.
Stir in vanilla and almond extracts. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until just combined. Scoop dough into tablespoon-sized balls and place on a lined baking sheet.
Flatten slightly and make a small indent in the center. Place one cherry in the center of each cookie and sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
Dust with powdered sugar if desired before serving.
Notes
Let the butter come to room temperature for easier creaming and fluffier cookies. Avoid overmixing once flour is added to keep the cookies soft and tender. Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cookie removal.
