Description
These soft and buttery sugar cookies are made with powdered sugar for an extra tender, melt-in-your-mouth texture. A festive sprinkle and snowy finish make them perfect for holidays, birthdays, or anytime you crave a sweet classic.
Ingredients
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon cream of tartar
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup powdered sugar (for rolling)
¼ cup rainbow sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
2. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Beat until fully combined.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
5. Fold in the sprinkles if using.
6. Cover the dough and chill for at least 30 minutes.
7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
8. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough, roll into balls, and coat each in powdered sugar.
9. Arrange on baking sheet 2 inches apart.
10. Bake for 9–11 minutes, or until edges are just slightly golden. Centers should still look soft.
11. Cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Chilling the dough prevents the cookies from spreading and helps keep their soft texture.
For a subtle twist, add ½ teaspoon of almond extract with the vanilla.
Store cookies in an airtight container with a slice of bread to retain moisture.
