Description
This Authentic Swedish Cardamom Cake is a lightly spiced, tender-crumbed treat with a warm citrusy aroma. A traditional Scandinavian fika favorite, it’s simple to bake and perfect for pairing with coffee or tea.
Ingredients
2 teaspoons ground cardamom (preferably freshly ground)
1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
¾ cup whole milk
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease and flour an 8-inch round or square cake pan, or line with parchment paper
- . In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cardamom, and salt. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the bowl.
- Alternate adding the dry mixture and milk to the creamed butter, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Mix until just combined. Pour batter into prepared pan, smooth the top, and sprinkle a little sugar if desired. Bake for 35–40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
Use freshly ground cardamom seeds from green pods for a more vibrant flavor.
Don’t overmix the batter; stir only until ingredients are combined to keep the crumb soft.
Cake is best served at room temperature with coffee or tea.
